Winter on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

2020-04-04 - Paul Almquist

Here links to 3 great videos for you to enjoy. Lots of people gripe about winter but it has a beauty that the other seasons do not have. When I look out the window in the winter on a sunny day I see a gazillion diamonds sparkling just for me, well not just me but for everyone. The next best thing is seeing a steam train in the winter. We had the opportunity to ride on both the Cumbres and Toltec and Durango and Silverton in September, 2016. There was a rather dark overcast sky when we arrived in the morning at the D & S station in Durango, CO. A light mist began falling as the train pulled out of the station. As the trip progressed the mist turned to rain, later it was freezng rain and then snow. What a beautiful sight going through the mountain pass and along the river surrounded by snow covered pine trees. We rode comfortably in the open air car the whole trip as we were prepared for the weather. I ventured into a coach a couple of times. It was warmer but the windows were all steamed up. Nothing outside could be seen. We did not make the trip to Colorado to ride in a locker room so back to the open car. That car did have a roof so we stayed dry and enjoyed the view.
